The United States Condemns the Arrest of Protesters in Russia

The United States has condemned the arrest of hundreds of protesters against the Russian government and expressed concern over the detention of Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption activist. Mark Toner, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, issued a statement on April 6, stating, "We call on the Russian government to release all protesters detained during peaceful demonstrations." Mr. Toner added, "The detention of peaceful demonstrators, human rights observers, and journalists is contrary to the fundamental values of democracy." The spokesperson also mentioned that Washington is "worried" to hear about the arrest of Alexei Navalny. On April 6, Russian police detained Alexei Navalny, a politician opposing the Russian government, along with over 800 protesters and marchers in Moscow. Navalny organized the Sunday demonstration to protest against corruption. The foundation associated with this activist has accused Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister of Russia, of corruption, and the protests were held in this context. Medvedev has been accused by protesters of asking wealthy individuals and state banks to donate to charities and NGOs, and then using these donations to purchase expensive properties. The Prime Minister of Russia has not yet responded to these allegations. In addition to Moscow, Russian citizens in other cities such as Vladivostok, Omsk, and Khabarovsk participated in similar protests. According to Reuters, "dozens" of protesters have also been detained in these cities. The Sunday demonstration is estimated to be the largest protest against the Russian government since 2011. The Russian government has labeled these protests as "illegal."
