The United States Expresses Concern Over IAEA Report on Iran

A spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House stated on Tuesday, December 26, that the United States is deeply concerned about the International Atomic Energy Agency's report regarding the increase in high-enriched uranium production in Iran. According to Reuters, the spokesperson noted that the escalation of Iran's nuclear tensions comes at a time when proxy groups supported by the Islamic Republic continue their 'dangerous and destabilizing activities in the region,' including drone and rocket attacks in Iraq and Syria, as well as ongoing Houthi attacks against commercial vessels in the area. Just hours earlier, the IAEA had warned about the renewed increase in high-enriched uranium production in Iran. The agency announced that the Islamic Republic has once again increased the speed and amount of 60% enriched uranium production. According to the statement from this international body, the amount of 60% enrichment in Iran, which had decreased to 3 kilograms per month, has increased again. The IAEA confirmed that Iran has raised the production of 60% enriched uranium hexafluoride at the Fordow and Natanz sites to about 9 kilograms per month since the end of November. Uranium enriched to 60% is close to weapons-grade. The IAEA, the UN's nuclear watchdog, stated that the Islamic Republic has violated the conditions set out in the 'JCPOA' agreement, and the 60% enrichment is 'close to the level required for weapon production,' which is unjustifiable for a country that claims it does not have a nuclear weapons program. The IAEA has been warning about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program for years, and the United States and the European Union have sanctioned the Iranian government and officials for advancing a suspicious nuclear program and uranium enrichment with military applications.
