The United States Lifts Some Sanctions on Sudan

The United States lifted some sanctions against Sudan that had been in place for two decades on Friday, October 6, citing the Sudanese government's progress in combating terrorism and a relative improvement in human rights conditions in the country. According to Reuters, Donald Trump has lifted the ban on Sudan's trade with U.S. entities and other sanctions that prevented Sudan from accessing the global financial system. The report states that the process leading to the lifting of sanctions began during Barack Obama's presidency, which has faced opposition from some human rights groups since then. The U.S. decision represents a significant shift in its policy towards the government of Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who once hosted Osama bin Laden and is wanted by the International Criminal Court for allegedly orchestrating genocide in Darfur. Although Sudan remains on the list of state sponsors of terrorism alongside Iran and Syria, which will continue to prohibit arms sales to the country, some Sudanese officials will remain on separate sanctions lists due to human rights violations in the Darfur conflict. The lifting of some sanctions indicates that the U.S. has concluded that Khartoum has made progress in meeting some of Washington's requests, including cooperation in counter-terrorism, efforts to resolve internal conflicts, and allowing humanitarian aid to be sent to Darfur and other rebel border areas. U.S. officials say that the Trump administration has also ensured that Sudan will not seek arms trade with North Korea, otherwise the U.S. will not offer any leniency in this regard. Sudan has long been suspected of arms trading and military connections with North Korea. Close ties with Iran have also been a point of contention between Khartoum and Washington, with reports indicating that Sudan has recently distanced itself from Iran in its foreign policy. The U.S. State Department states that the lifting of sanctions, which is the result of 16 months of diplomatic efforts, will take effect on October 10.
