The United States Sanctions 30 Individuals and Entities for Assisting Iran and North Korea's Military Programs

The United States has sanctioned 30 foreign individuals and entities for transferring sensitive technology to Iran for its missile program or violating export controls related to Iran, North Korea, and Syria. The U.S. State Department announced these sanctions on Friday, April 4, stating that they were imposed on April 1. According to the statement, 11 companies and individuals from China, North Korea, or the United Arab Emirates have been sanctioned for transferring technology that could enhance Iran's ballistic missile program. This list includes 9 Chinese individuals and entities, one company from North Korea, and one from the UAE. Reuters reports that 19 other individuals and entities have been sanctioned for violating the non-proliferation treaty concerning Iran, North Korea, and Syria. Reports indicate that the mentioned individuals and institutions have transferred or acquired sensitive technology that could be used in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. CBS News states that these sanctions do not constitute a violation of the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., which was signed in July 2015 to resolve Tehran's nuclear program. The agreement specifies that parties to Iran cannot take actions such as sanctions that would violate the JCPOA. Since Donald Trump took office on January 20, this is the second time the United States has imposed sanctions against Iran's missile program. The U.S. Treasury Department had previously sanctioned 25 Iranian individuals and entities related to an Islamic Republic missile test on February 4. At that time, the Iranian Foreign Ministry threatened to impose sanctions against the U.S. in response, but no reports have emerged indicating that such sanctions have been implemented. This test was conducted in early February, and according to Nikki Haley, the U.S. representative to the United Nations, the tested missile had the capability to carry a nuclear warhead. Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan confirmed the test but stated that 'the recent test was in line with our plans, and we will not allow any foreign interference in our defense affairs.' Iran claims that its missile tests are conducted for defensive deterrence purposes, but U.S. officials have warned the Islamic Republic that these tests contradict UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls on Tehran to refrain from testing ballistic missiles. The new U.S. sanctions against Iran come as Republican and Democratic senators introduced a draft bill to tighten non-nuclear sanctions against Iran in the U.S. Senate on Thursday. This bill, supported by 14 Democratic and Republican senators, imposes mandatory sanctions on any individual or entity associated with Iran's ballistic missile program and also on commercial partners of this program. Countries subject to U.S. sanctions have not yet reacted to this development.
