The United States Sanctions Several Individuals and Entities for Assisting North Korea's Military Industries

The U.S. government has intensified its economic blockade against North Korea by sanctioning 9 institutions, 16 individuals, and 6 ships for allegedly aiding Pyongyang's military programs. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against two companies based in China for exporting millions of dollars worth of metals and other goods used in North Korea's military industries. Additionally, the Treasury has sanctioned several officials from North Korea's Workers' Party operating in China, Russia, and the Abkhazia region of Georgia, urging these countries to expel them. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated, 'This department will systematically target individuals and entities that assist the North Korean regime's weapons programs, including officials involved in the country's evasion of sanctions.' Mnuchin noted that the U.S. is targeting individuals in Russia, China, and other countries and 'seeking their expulsion from these countries.' 'We are targeting oil companies, shipping, and commercial firms that meet North Korea's needs and assist its nuclear programs.' According to this decision, the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has added 16 more individuals to the sanctions list. In addition, 9 institutions and companies, including North Korea's crude oil industries and 6 of its ships, have been sanctioned. This action allows the U.S. government to block the assets of these individuals and entities in the U.S. and prohibit any transactions by U.S. citizens and companies with them. According to the Associated Press, 10 of the individuals on the U.S. sanctions list are representatives of a company affiliated with North Korea's military industries in China and Russia. North Korea's military industries have already been subject to U.S. sanctions. Furthermore, five North Korean shipping companies have also been added to the U.S. sanctions list. The goal of the new U.S. sanctions against North Korean companies and officials, particularly in China and Russia, is to prevent them from generating revenue and acquiring the necessary funds to develop their nuclear and missile programs.
