The United States Submitted a Draft Resolution on Iran's Nuclear Agreement to the Security Council

Diplomats associated with the United Nations Security Council say that the United States submitted a draft resolution regarding the Vienna nuclear agreement between Iran and global powers to this UN body on Wednesday, July 15. According to a report by Agence France-Presse, citing these diplomats without naming them, the aim of presenting this draft resolution to the UN Security Council is for the Council to endorse the comprehensive nuclear agreement. This resolution, if approved, would mean the lifting of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council in connection with Iran's nuclear program. According to the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group, consisting of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany, the set of sanctions against Tehran will be lifted, and in return, Tehran will take steps to limit its nuclear program to the extent that it cannot produce nuclear weapons. The report states that the Security Council will vote on this draft resolution next Monday or Tuesday. Statements by Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's Foreign Minister, can also corroborate this report. Mr. Zarif stated upon his return to Iran that 'the Security Council will recognize for the first time the enrichment program of a developing country in a resolution next week.' On Wednesday, Barack Obama, the President of the United States, also defended the nuclear agreement with Iran, calling it 'historic.' According to Mr. Obama, this agreement fulfills the goals of American negotiators to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. Previously, Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran, had also stated that Iran has achieved all its goals regarding the lifting of sanctions and the continuation of its nuclear activities with this agreement.
