The US and South Korea Demand the Withdrawal of North Korean Forces from Russia

On Wednesday, November 1, the defense ministers of the United States and South Korea called on North Korea to withdraw its military forces from Russia. According to Washington's estimates, about 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed in Russia for potential action against Ukrainian forces. Russia and North Korea have deepened their political and military relations as the war in Ukraine has dragged on. However, the deployment of North Korean troops to the front lines in Ukraine could signify a significant escalation of tensions, raising widespread international concerns. In a joint press conference at the Pentagon, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated, "I urge them to withdraw their forces from Russia." His South Korean counterpart, Kim Yong-hyun, who stood beside him, echoed this request. Austin noted that the United States will continue to "work with allies and partners to deter Russia from employing these forces in the battlefield." He added, however, that there is a "high likelihood" that Moscow will still utilize North Korean forces. According to the US Defense Secretary, North Korean troops have been equipped with Russian uniforms and weapons. South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun also stated in the joint press conference that Seoul believes the deployment of North Korean forces could lead to increased security threats on the Korean Peninsula. The US has sanctioned 400 individuals and entities for supporting Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The Pentagon reported that "a few" North Korean military personnel have been stationed in the Kursk region of Russia. The US Department of Defense confirmed that North Korea has sent 10,000 soldiers to Russia and acknowledged that at least 3,000 military personnel have been dispatched.
