The US and UK Urge Their Citizens to Leave Lebanon

The embassies of the United States and the United Kingdom in Beirut have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon due to escalating border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. According to the Times of Israel, the US embassy issued a statement on Thursday saying, "We recommend that American citizens in Lebanon take the necessary steps to exit the country." The statement also noted, "However, commercial accommodation options remain available at this time." A similar warning was issued by the UK embassy, stating, "If you are currently in Lebanon, we encourage you to leave the country immediately." The UK embassy also excluded commercial accommodation from its warning but advised British nationals to avoid areas where protests may occur. Previously, both countries had warned their citizens against traveling to Lebanon. These statements come as tensions at the northern border of Lebanon continue. According to a correspondent from VOA, a guided anti-tank missile was fired from inside Lebanon into Israeli territory on Thursday, October 19, prompting the Israeli army to target several positions of Hezbollah in response. This group, supported financially and militarily by the Islamic Republic, has carried out sporadic attacks on the border with northern Israel since the Hamas militants' attack on Israel on October 7. The Israeli army has responded by shelling Hezbollah positions. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday, October 16, that Iran and Hezbollah should not "test us" in northern Israel. The killing of two senior Hamas officials in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, a meeting between the Egyptian president and the CENTCOM commander, and increased global efforts to "restore stability" to the region are also noteworthy. Tensions at the Lebanon-Israel border continue, with the British Prime Minister stating in Tel Aviv that they stand with Israel against terrorism, and exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have intensified.
