The US, Japan, and South Korea Condemn North Korea's Ballistic Missile Launch

The United States, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint statement condemning North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile test as a "violation" of multiple United Nations resolutions and a "threat to peace and stability" in the region. According to Reuters, the statement urged North Korea to cease its illegal actions and return to the negotiating table. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Japan's Yoshimasa Hayashi, and South Korea's Park Jin expressed their "joint commitment" to defend Japan and South Korea. They emphasized that despite North Korea's ongoing expansion of nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, the "international community" remains determined to achieve complete "denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula. This missile test occurred amid North Korea's threats to down a US spy plane and condemnation of the deployment of a US submarine armed with nuclear cruise missiles to South Korea. CNN reported that the flight duration of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile, launched from North Korea's eastern coast, was 74 minutes, the longest flight time for a North Korean missile. Military experts believe that the Hwasong-18 is a solid-fuel ballistic missile that could significantly enhance North Korea's nuclear strike capability. Following the test, North Korean state media declared that the launch of this missile, which is central to North Korea's nuclear strike force, serves as a warning to the US and other enemies of Pyongyang. Images broadcasted by North Korean television reportedly related to the intercontinental missile test show the increasing tensions between Pyongyang and the US and its allies. The missile was launched during a meeting of South Korean and Japanese leaders, and the US has deployed nuclear-capable bombers over the Korean Peninsula.
