The West Calls for UN Action Regarding Iran's Missile Test

European countries and the United States have called for an investigation by the UN Security Council's sanctions committee regarding Iran's recent missile test, describing it as a "serious violation" of UN sanctions. According to AFP, on October 21, Britain, Germany, and the U.S. submitted a report to the UN sanctions committee and requested "appropriate action" on this matter. Samantha Power, the U.S. representative to the UN, informed Security Council members that the missile tested in Iran is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The four countries requesting investigation and action stated that the missile test of "Emad" contradicts Resolution 1929, which was adopted in 2010. Resolution 1929 prohibits Tehran from conducting tests related to ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The U.S. ambassador to the UN stated that this test was a "provocative" action and that the "United States views it as a serious issue" that threatens regional stability. Tehran rejects the claim that the new missile test contradicts the UN resolution, emphasizing that it does not intend to develop nuclear weapons. The news of Iran's new missile test named "Emad" was announced on October 11. Iran's Ministry of Defense stated that the new missile, intended to replace the "Shahab-3," is entirely domestically produced and can be guided and controlled until it hits the target. The request made by European countries and the U.S. could be a first step towards imposing new sanctions, although such a move would also require the final agreement of China and Russia. Matteo Ricraft, the UK's representative to the UN, noted that no deadline has been set for the sanctions committee's report to the Security Council, but "there is clearly a sense of urgency for it."
