The White House Hosts the 'American Jewish Heritage Month' Ceremony

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, will host several Broadway stars at a ceremony on Tuesday to commemorate 'American Jewish Heritage Month' at the White House. The musical 'Parade' is adapted from a book of the same name by Alfred Uhry, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, and it addresses the trial, imprisonment, and murder of Leo Frank, an American Jew in Georgia in 1915. Today, many believe this individual was innocent and is considered one of the victims of anti-Semitism in the United States, and his horrific death has spurred further efforts to combat hate and bigotry. During the Tuesday ceremony, Joe Biden will speak on various topics related to this, including his administration's efforts to counter the rise of anti-Semitism in America. Elham Yaghoubi, a writer and human rights activist, told Voice of America about American Jewish Heritage Month: 'The designation of this month as American Jewish Heritage Month was first proposed during George W. Bush's presidency in 2006, which honored the cultural achievements of American Jews in this land.' She further adds: 'Since America hosts a large number of Iranian Jews, their achievements can represent the cultural, economic, and social efforts of these immigrants in America and deserve attention.' According to Ms. Yaghoubi, 'On the other hand, celebrating this month can be seen as a tool to confront anti-Semitism. In the past decade, anti-Semitism in the contemporary world, especially in America and Europe, has taken on much broader dimensions than its classical form throughout history, and even more complex than what occurred during World War II.' This writer and human rights activist emphasizes that 'the struggle against this abnormal phenomenon must occur from various racial, cultural, religious, and nationalistic perspectives.' A knowledgeable source at the White House, speaking on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press, stated that the President will acknowledge the achievements of American Jews and mention that the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 was one of the reasons he decided to run for the presidency in 2020. During the clashes between neo-Nazis and their opponents in Charlottesville, a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd, killing a woman named Heather Heyer. It is also expected that Joe Biden will announce the appointment of the first special envoy to combat anti-Semitism, an increase in federal funding to help secure synagogues and Jewish community centers, and the formation of a meeting at the White House to combat hate-driven violence.
