The World's Longest-Range Aircraft Prepares for a 20-Hour Journey

The Airbus A350-900 ULR is the world's longest-range aircraft, being prepared for the longest non-stop flight in the world for 20 hours, to be delivered to Singapore Airlines. Currently, the longest commercial flight in the world, covering a distance of 14,535 kilometers, is operated by Qatar Airways from Doha to Auckland using a Boeing 777-200LR, lasting about 17 hours. The Boeing 777 is the longest-range aircraft in the world with the highest safety standards, but the introduction of the new Airbus A350 has changed the narrative. This model is set to soon operate the longest air route between this city-state and New York City in the USA, a journey that will take 20 hours. Singapore Airlines has ordered 67 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, of which seven are ULR models, capable of flying approximately 18,000 kilometers. Compared to the standard A350-900 model, the ULR version carries an additional 24,000 liters of fuel for long-haul flights. Recently, the A350-1000 model, the largest twin-engine aircraft produced by Airbus, has also been introduced, with Iran Air set to receive 16 units of this model. The Airbus A350 project began in 2006, and it is the first Airbus aircraft to use carbon fiber reinforced polymer instead of the common lightweight aluminum alloys in aircraft construction. This aircraft was designed to compete with Boeing 777 and Boeing 787, with its first model entering the market in 2013. The A350-1000 was built to compete with the Boeing 777 and is said by Airbus to consume 25% less fuel and weigh 30 tons less. Previously, the A350-800 and A350-900 models were produced, which are the main competitors of the Boeing 787. Now, with the arrival of the A350-1000 and ULR models, Airbus has turned its attention to competing with the Boeing 777. The A350-900 ULR shares similarities with the A350-1000, which is a stretched version of the A350. The ULR model utilizes maximum capacity of the center tank, carrying over 9 tons of additional fuel. With the added weight of the fuel, the cargo capacity of this model has decreased. Reuters has reported that on this special flight, Singapore Airlines will only use business class seats, meaning the Airbus A350 ULR model has a capacity of about 170 passengers, whereas the base model, with a combination of economy and business class seats, has a capacity of about 320. However, a 20-hour flight can be torturous and lengthy for many, which is why Airbus has attempted to implement a different design inside this aircraft. The interior design aims to make the space inside the aircraft resemble a room, hence the ceiling is designed to be higher than other aircraft to convey a sense of suitable space to passengers. A variety of lighting systems have been used to provide a better atmosphere for passengers, and due to the carbon fiber body, designers have more flexibility to place more and larger windows. In most aircraft, due to the use of aluminum bodies, designers face structural limitations when adding more windows. Additionally, Airbus has recently introduced a design that allows for the use of cargo space to create suitable areas for passenger sleeping arrangements. By reducing the number of seats on long-haul flights and lowering cargo, it is possible to use part of the cargo space in the lower section of the aircraft for sleeping rooms or play areas.
