Theresa May's Government Receives Confidence Vote in the UK Parliament Again

Theresa May, the Prime Minister of the UK, received a confidence vote in Parliament on Wednesday evening, January 16. According to the results of the voting in the House of Commons, 325 representatives voted in favor of Ms. May's government, while 305 voted against it. Thus, her government can continue its work. Earlier reports indicated that despite Ms. May's heavy defeat in gaining Parliament's approval for her Brexit plan, she would receive a confidence vote on Wednesday. Only seventy-three days remain until the scheduled exit of the UK from the European Union, and in this situation, the failure of Theresa May's plan has created many uncertainties about the future of this exit. 432 votes against Ms. May's plan in the House of Commons compared to 202 votes in favor marked the heaviest defeat for a Prime Minister in modern British history. At the end of this voting, she called for a meeting in the UK Parliament to assess the level of support from representatives for her government's continuation. Meanwhile, some EU countries have emphasized that they will not negotiate a new agreement with the UK, meaning that the UK's exit from this union will occur without any agreement. On the other hand, Parliament representatives in their Tuesday meeting asked the Prime Minister to back down from the red lines she had set for Brexit negotiations and prepare another plan. Ms. May stated that she intends to consult with parliamentary parties first and will announce the result by Monday. However, she emphasized that she will not abandon two general principles: one is to limit immigration from the EU, and the other is that the UK must have its own trade policy. This means rejecting the Labour Party's request for the UK to join a customs union or the EU single market. Ms. May's statements on Wednesday also contained hints of the UK's willingness to delay Brexit. She said that if there is a clear plan to reach an agreement, the EU would allow such a delay. Although the Prime Minister's office insists that the government wants to implement Brexit on schedule. EU officials have previously stated that a delay in Brexit may be possible, but only until the new members of the European Parliament convene in June. Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, said, 'There is still time for negotiations, but we are currently waiting to see what plan the British Prime Minister has.' Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, also stated that it seems there is still room for discussion on one or two issues.
