Theresa May's Government Remains in Power with Support from a Conservative Party

Theresa May's government, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeded on Monday, July 5, in maintaining its power by garnering support from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland, which had faced a crisis following recent elections. According to Reuters, based on an agreement between Theresa May and Arlene Foster, the leader of the DUP, the British government has committed to increasing funding for Northern Ireland by £1 billion ($1.27 billion) for two years in exchange for the DUP's support on Brexit, budget plans, and internal security. Negotiations between the two parties lasted more than two weeks until Theresa May and Arlene Foster officially signed their new agreement at the Prime Minister's office in London on Monday. The Democratic Unionist Party, which has 10 representatives in the UK Parliament, supports the unity of the United Kingdom and the retention of Northern Ireland in this union, as well as supporting Britain's exit from the European Union. This agreement is signed amid criticism from many, including within Theresa May's party, due to the DUP's conservative views, particularly its opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, which has led to opposition against any coalition with the DUP. This new agreement allows Theresa May's government to remain in power and continue its negotiations with the European Union regarding Britain's exit from the bloc.
