Theresa May's Optimism for a Brexit Deal Supported by the UK Parliament

On Tuesday, February 12, Theresa May, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, stated that she believes she can reach a Brexit agreement that Parliament will support, allowing the UK to exit the European Union on March 29. Speaking in Parliament to update representatives on her negotiations with the EU, May once again rejected the Labour Party's call for a customs union. The Labour Party is proposing a customs union with Europe to address the issue of establishing a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which becomes necessary as the UK exits the EU, while the Republic of Ireland remains a member. May said, 'Negotiations are at a very sensitive stage, and we must keep our focus to ensure Brexit happens on time and that the changes this House is asking for are made.' She added, 'To achieve these changes, we need support. I believe that by supporting workers' rights, improving environmental protections, and increasing Parliament's role in the next phase of negotiations, we can reach an agreement that this House will support.' Last month, May's previous plan for the UK's exit from the EU faced a significant setback in Parliament, resulting in the worst defeat for a UK Prime Minister in the last century, with 432 Members of Parliament voting against it.
