Thousands Gather for Second Consecutive Night in Protest Against Istanbul Mayor's Arrest

Thousands of people in Istanbul gathered on Thursday evening, March 30, for the second consecutive night in front of the city's municipality to protest the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor, who is a serious and key rival of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey. Protesters claim that İmamoğlu's arrest by Erdoğan's government on charges of 'corruption and links to terrorist networks' is actually a political attempt to 'eliminate' one of his main competitors from the presidential elections in Turkey in 2028. Meanwhile, Erdoğan and the 'Justice and Development Party' have denied any interference in the current events in the country, stating that the mayor's arrest is a judicial matter, not a political one. Ekrem İmamoğlu, along with several other prominent political figures, including two regional mayors, was arrested on March 29 during a police raid on his home. He was set to be announced as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election in Turkey a few days later. The arrest of this popular opposition leader has deepened concerns about the decline of democracy in Turkey and has sparked widespread protests in Istanbul and other parts of the country, including Adana and Izmir. These protests continue despite the government's four-day ban on demonstrations across the country and the imposition of restrictions on protesters by closing several roads. Turkish riot police fired tear gas and plastic bullets at protesters shouting 'Erdoğan resign' on Thursday. According to the Associated Press, police prevented a group of young people from breaking through barriers to move toward Taksim Square, Istanbul's central square, using pepper spray to disperse them. In Ankara, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protests at the Middle East Technical University, one of the city's prestigious universities. The Ministry of Interior also reported that six police officers were injured in clashes with protesters in Istanbul. At the gathering in front of the municipality building, Ugur Ozel, leader of the Republican People's Party, which is İmamoğlu's party, urged party supporters to take to the streets to demand their rights but not to resort to violence. This arrest also sent a massive shock to Turkey's financial markets, causing a temporary halt in trading on Wednesday to prevent panic selling of stocks. Mansur Yavaş, the mayor of Ankara and another popular opposition figure, joined the gathering and called on all opposition parties to unite against 'injustices.' The Ministry of Interior of Turkey also reported the arrest of dozens of people for posting 'provocative' content on social media related to the mayor's arrest. The Turkish prosecutor's office warned protesters against using the term 'coup' regarding the mayor's arrest and stated that the 'independence' of the judiciary should not be questioned.
