Thousandth Day of the Ukraine War: Britain Emphasizes the Importance of Countering Russian Aggression

The United Nations Security Council met in New York on Monday, November 18, 2024, to mark the thousandth day of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. The British Foreign Secretary, as the council's rotating president, delivered a speech emphasizing that the Ukraine war is not just an issue of security for that country or Europe, but a matter of global peace and security and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. David Lammy noted that if Russian President Vladimir Putin is not thwarted in this aggression, the world will move towards losing the fundamental principles of international law and the legitimacy of national borders. He also condemned Russia's recent actions, particularly the extensive missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, describing these actions as an attempt to plunge Ukraine into darkness. The British Foreign Secretary announced that London has imposed new sanctions on Iran for providing ballistic missiles to Russia and reported on broader efforts to support Ukraine and counter Russia's aggressive actions. The thousand-day war of Russian aggression against Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has caused immense human and economic losses. Over 11,000 civilians have been killed, and nearly 25,000 have been injured, with the actual figures likely higher. The destruction of infrastructure and the forced migration of about 10 million Ukrainians, including 6.8 million who have fled to other countries, have been among the main consequences of this devastating war. Ukrainian lands have also become one of the most mine-contaminated areas in the world. During this time, the global community has taken significant actions to support Ukraine. G7 member countries have provided extensive financial and military aid packages to Kyiv. Britain has recently announced a $50 billion aid package for Ukraine from frozen Russian assets. Britain and the European Union have also restricted the export of drone and missile parts to Iran and imposed sanctions on Iranian companies, including the Islamic Republic's shipping group, in connection with the transfer of weapons to Russia, and efforts to weaken Russia's military capabilities continue. David Lammy concluded his speech by warning that if the principles of the UN Charter are violated due to failure to counter Russian aggression, the security of all countries will be jeopardized.
