Three Dead and Over 70 Injured in Bomb Explosion in Van, Turkey

A bomb-laden vehicle exploded on August 19 in the city of Van, eastern Turkey, resulting in at least 3 deaths and over 70 injuries, according to the country's state news agency. Turkish officials have blamed the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for the explosion. The bomb was detonated remotely and was parked near a police station. Local official Zaheer Sougandeh told Anadolu Agency that three of the 71 injured are in critical condition, and 17 of the injured are police officers. Muhammad Parlak, the deputy governor of Van, stated that the three deceased were civilians. Turkish police have arrested a suspect who was injured and has been transferred to the Van police headquarters. Van is a tourist city inhabited by both Turks and Kurds, but generally, unlike cities like Diyarbakir, it has been relatively calm, with few incidents of explosions like the one that occurred early Thursday. Recently, a senior PKK official stated that the militant group has adopted a 'new method of warfare' and that its attacks will no longer be limited to specific areas but will occur in mountains, villages, and cities. Last Monday, eight people were killed in a vehicle explosion attributed to this group on a highway leading to Diyarbakir. On August 10, at least 13 people were killed and dozens injured in clashes and explosions in southeastern Turkish cities, with the PKK being held responsible in all these cases. Ankara, the European Union, Washington, and Tehran consider the PKK a terrorist organization. The PKK has been engaged in armed conflict since 1984, aiming to create an independent region for Kurds in Turkey, resulting in over 40,000 deaths due to the conflict.
