Three Israelis and One Egyptian Killed in Rare Border Clash

In a rare armed clash on Saturday between Israeli and Egyptian border guards, three Israeli soldiers and one Egyptian officer were killed. Richard Hecht, a spokesperson for the Israeli army, stated that the confrontation began at night when the border guards attempted to prevent drug smuggling into Israel. According to him, a few hours later, two Israeli border guards were killed as a result of gunfire. After these two guards did not respond to radio calls, their bodies were discovered. The Israeli army reported that the Egyptian border guard and a third Israeli border guard lost their lives in the subsequent exchange of fire. The Egyptian army also announced that one of its border guards crossed security barriers in pursuit of drug traffickers and exchanged fire with Israeli soldiers, resulting in his death along with three Israeli border guards. The Israeli army spokesperson mentioned that investigations are ongoing in full cooperation with the Egyptian army, and soldiers are searching for any potential attackers. This is the first deadly exchange of fire along the Israel-Egypt border in over a decade. The Israeli army stated that one of the three border guards who died in this incident was a woman. The Sinai Desert in Egypt is a hotspot for militant Islamists and sometimes drug traffickers. Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979 and have maintained close security relations since then. A decade ago, Israel built a fence along its border with Egypt to prevent the influx of African migrants and armed Islamist militants from the Sinai. Palestinian officials reported a ceasefire agreement between 'Islamic Jihad' and Israel, while three senior Islamic Jihad officials and ten civilians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. A joint meeting of Israel and four Arab allies, accompanied by the U.S., was held in Abu Dhabi.
