Three Israelis Killed in Armed Attack in the West Bank

An armed attack by Palestinian assailants on a bus carrying Israeli citizens in the occupied West Bank has left at least three dead and seven injured. This attack occurred on Monday, January 7, in the Palestinian village of 'Al-Funduq', located on a main road between the eastern and western parts of the occupied territories, which is frequented by both Palestinians and Israelis. The Israeli rescue service in the West Bank reported that two of the victims were women in their sixties, and the third was a man in his forties. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, promised in response to this attack that 'the Palestinians responsible for this malicious attack and all those who assisted them will be identified and punished.' The extremist group Hamas, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, praised the attack in a statement but did not claim responsibility. Since the onset of the Gaza war in mid-October 2023, violence in the West Bank has sharply escalated. The Israeli army and security forces have attacked Palestinian areas more than 90 times, while Palestinian assailants have also killed Israeli citizens with firearms or knives. The Palestinian Authority's health ministry, which controls these areas, reports that at least 838 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed in Israeli military attacks since the beginning of the Gaza war. These figures do not distinguish between militants and Palestinian civilians. According to United Nations statistics, at least 46 Israelis, including 19 soldiers, have been killed in attacks by Palestinian militants during the same period. Approximately three million Palestinians live in the West Bank, which is under Israeli military occupation. Daily affairs in the cities and main population centers in this area are managed by the Palestinian Authority. The establishment of Jewish settlements began a few years after the occupation of this area, and UN statistics indicate that settlement construction has continued unabated, with the population exceeding half a million. Meanwhile, despite ongoing negotiations and reports of progress in talks in recent weeks, a ceasefire in Gaza is still uncertain. Israel's extensive and continuous attacks on the Gaza Strip began in response to a surprise attack by Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups on Israeli territory on October 7 of last year. Approximately 1,200 people, including several hundred soldiers, were killed in the attack on Israel, and around 240 were taken hostage. According to the health ministry of the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas, at least 45,000 Palestinians have been killed and around 100,000 injured in Israeli attacks over the past 15 months. These figures do not specify the number of militants.
