Three Killed in Russian Missile Attack on Kharkiv in Northern Ukraine

In a missile attack on Wednesday, Russia targeted an eight-story building and a factory in the city of Kharkiv in northern Ukraine, resulting in three deaths and at least five injuries. The occurrence of this attack was announced by the head of the regional police investigation department. The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia to the north and is close to the front line, has been regularly targeted by Russian forces throughout the two-year war between Russia and Ukraine. According to Reuters, Serhiy Bolvinov, the head of the police investigation department in the region, stated on Facebook that a 'regular printing house, a paint and furniture factory' were hit in this attack. He mentioned that the attack caused a fire over an area of more than one thousand square meters and indicated that the casualty count might rise. Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, Western countries have repeatedly accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of providing military support to Moscow, including supplying missiles and drones. Some reports suggest that the Islamic Republic may intend to provide ballistic missiles to Russia. On Friday, March 15, the G7 countries warned the Islamic Republic that if it supplies ballistic missiles for use in the Ukraine war to Russia, they would impose new 'severe' sanctions against Iran. This group, which includes the United States, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada, stated: 'We again call on third parties to immediately cease material support for Russia's illegal and unjustifiable aggressive war against Ukraine; otherwise, they will face severe consequences.' The G7 announced that if the Islamic Republic continues to provide ballistic missiles or related technologies to Russia, they are prepared for a rapid and coordinated response, including new and significant measures. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed Washington's concerns regarding this issue during his meeting on Friday in Vienna. He told reporters: 'We have sent very clear messages to Iran not to do this... and I think the concern about this possibility and the commitment to respond to it if necessary is very real and resolute.' A senior U.S. official also told reporters that if Iran decides to sell ballistic missiles to Russia, the costs would far outweigh the benefits, adding: 'It hasn't happened yet, but the risk is real.' Since the beginning of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, the United States has sent about $44 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and is working to send more with congressional approval. U.S. allies have also committed over $44 billion during this time.
