Tomaj Salehi Tops List of Influential Music Figures for 2025

A reputable music magazine has placed Tomaj Salehi, the Iranian protest rapper, at the top of its list of the most influential figures in the music world for the upcoming year, 2025. The music magazine 'Spin', published in the United States, released this list on Thursday, January 10, featuring personalities who will continue to have an impact in the music industry. Tomaj Salehi, who gained global fame during the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests in 2022, is listed alongside renowned global figures such as American singer Taylor Swift, Lucian Grainge, founder of Universal Music, American guitarist Steve Van Zandt, Lebanese singer Fairuz, and Tarik Sharif and Matt Zingler, founders of the world's largest rap festival, 'Rolling Loud'. In an interview with Spin, Salehi emphasized that 'my greatest motivation [for fighting] is to change the balance of power in favor of the people, leading to our attainment of political and civil freedoms, so that the children of Iran can have a better future.' Salehi was actively involved in the widespread protests of 2022, which began after the death of Mahsa Jina Amini while in the custody of the morality police, supporting all protesters, detainees, and political activists. This imprisoned rapper was released on bail on November 18, 2023, after enduring 252 days in solitary confinement and a total of one year and 21 days in prison, but was re-arrested just 12 days later after a video was released in which he described being tortured in prison. The news of the death sentence issued for this protest singer by the Revolutionary Court sparked widespread global outrage, with human rights organizations and Western governments calling for the annulment of this sentence and the release of Tomaj Salehi. Ultimately, Salehi was freed from prison in mid-December of this year. The 2024 Human Rights Award from the Václav Havel Foundation was also awarded to a representative of Tomaj Salehi, the protest rapper and former political prisoner, in October of this year.
