Tony Blair Resigns from Quartet Middle East Peace Group Representation

He has faced criticism, particularly from Palestinians, for not making significant efforts in this regard. On Wednesday, June 6, Reuters reported, citing officials close to the Quartet, which consists of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia, that despite his resignation, Tony Blair will continue to be involved in peace efforts between Israel and the Middle East in an informal capacity. The group's statement acknowledged Mr. Blair's decision to resign and praised him for his 'steadfastness' in fulfilling his commitments and his efforts to improve the Palestinian economy. Meanwhile, some Palestinian politicians have criticized Mr. Blair's performance as the Quartet's representative, accusing him of bias towards Israel, including Hanan Ashrawi, a former Minister of Higher Education in Israel, who emphasized that Mr. Blair's resignation was predictable. According to Ms. Ashrawi, Tony Blair had minimal impact on the Quartet's diplomacy and has shown that he 'favors Israel.' She further stated, 'He [Tony Blair] had no principle or law except to occasionally listen to Netanyahu.' During Mr. Blair's eight-year tenure, the Middle East peace process has nearly reached a deadlock. However, Benjamin Netanyahu praised Tony Blair, stating that he made significant efforts to enhance stability in the region and helped reduce tensions between Israel and Palestine 'during crises.' Reuters, citing an unnamed Quartet official, reported that Tony Blair indicated in a letter to Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, that he would resign from his position at the end of June. The report also stated that a source close to Tony Blair said that the former Prime Minister of the UK will now work to strengthen relations between Israel and the Arab world.
