Traffic Accident in Afghanistan Leaves at Least 73 Dead

A collision between two passenger buses and a fuel tanker in eastern Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of at least 73 people, an incident described as one of the deadliest road accidents in the country. On Sunday, May 8, the French news agency reported that many of the victims were women and children, whose bodies are unidentifiable due to the fire, while dozens more have been injured. This incident occurred in Ghazni province near the capital of Afghanistan, an area that has repeatedly faced severe attacks from Taliban militants. The report includes statements from Ismail Kawousi, spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Health, confirming the death toll of 73 and suggesting that the number of victims may be even higher. However, statistics released by other Afghan officials regarding the casualties from this traffic accident are significantly lower than those provided by the health ministry official. Previously, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Afghanistan section reported, citing General Aminullah Amarkhil, the police chief of Ghazni, that 14 people had died and 73 were injured in this incident. However, the radio's report cites other security officials in Ghazni province stating that 50 people were killed in this event. The high number of road accidents in Afghanistan is one of the country's problems, primarily resulting from poor road conditions and a lack of traffic regulations. The French news agency writes that some of the roads in this country are among the most dangerous in the world.
