Trial of Hong Kong Media Tycoon Begins; US and UK Call for Release of Jimmy Lai

With the trial of Jimmy Lai, the pro-democracy media tycoon in Hong Kong, beginning over national security charges, the US and UK have called for his release. These charges could lead to a life sentence for Lai. Lai is the founder of the Chinese-language newspaper "Apple Daily," which frequently criticized Beijing and supported the major protest movement that erupted in 2019 in Hong Kong. At 76 years old, he has been accused of 'collusion' with foreign forces under a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020. The trial, which began on Monday, December 18, is set to be closely monitored as a test of political freedoms and judicial independence in Hong Kong and will take place over the next 80 working days in an open court. Lai, a self-made businessman who made his fortune selling clothes before turning to media, also holds British citizenship. He had not been seen in public since 2021 and appeared in court on Monday in a suit. Representatives from the US, UK, Australia, and Canada consulates were present to observe the trial's start. Lai, who has previously been deprived of the right to choose his lawyer, will be tried without a jury. Lai's case has been widely condemned by the international community; however, Beijing has dismissed these criticisms as stigmatization and interference in China's internal affairs. David Cameron, the UK Foreign Secretary, expressed particular concern about the political motivations behind Lai's prosecution, describing him as a 'prominent and outspoken journalist and publisher' who is being targeted in a blatant attempt to prevent the peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of expression and assembly. Cameron added, 'I urge the Hong Kong authorities to end the trial and release Jimmy Lai.' Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US State Department, also called for Lai's release, stating that actions suppressing press freedom and limiting the free flow of information have undermined Hong Kong's democratic institutions. Lai has spent over 1,100 days in prison since 2020 and has previously been convicted in five other cases, including organizing and participating in marches during the pro-democracy protests of 2019. Local media reported that plans are in place for 1,000 police officers to provide round-the-clock security for the court during the trial. Despite heavy security measures outside the court, including armored vehicles and police with tactical gear, opponents of Lai's trial were seen around the courthouse. Police prevented prominent democracy activist Alexandra Wong, known as 'Grandma Wong,' from approaching the courthouse entrance. She was seen shouting with a British flag in hand, 'Support Apple Daily, support Jimmy Lai!' Emily Lau, a former pro-democracy legislator in Hong Kong, was also present in court, stating, 'I have come here to support Lai and hope that there is still an independent judiciary and rule of law in Hong Kong.' Hong Kong is governed under common law, inherited from its colonial past under Britain. However, critics argue that Beijing's national security law has curtailed their civil liberties, suppressed dissent, and undermined the judicial independence that once attracted foreign businesses to this financial hub. Apple Daily was forced to shut down in 2021 after being targeted by police under the national security law twice and having over two million dollars of its assets frozen. Lai's son recently expressed concern about his father's health in a maximum-security prison, stating, 'The illusion of fairness in Hong Kong's legal system has vanished. Authorities are using the legal system to target individuals like my father, who believe in democracy and democratic values.'
