Trial of Two Iranians in Germany on Charges of 'Espionage Against Opponents of the Islamic Republic'

The German judiciary is prosecuting two Iranians on charges of espionage against Iranian opponents of the Islamic Republic who are in exile. The Associated Press reported on Friday, April 8, citing the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, that the indictment against 31-year-old Meysam P. and 33-year-old Saeed R. was issued about two weeks ago in a Berlin court. The report states that the full names of the two individuals have not been disclosed due to German privacy laws. According to the German prosecutor's office, both defendants were previously members of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). The prosecutor's office also added that Meysam P. was spying for Iranian intelligence services until January 2013, and Saeed R. until August 2014. Their mission was reportedly to gather information regarding members of the PMOI and the National Council of Resistance of Iran in Germany and other EU member countries. The PMOI is considered an armed opposition group against the Iranian government, which particularly engaged in severe bloody conflicts with the security forces of the Islamic Republic in the 1980s. This group was on the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations until 2012, when it was finally removed from this list. Three years prior to this date, the European Union had also removed the group from its list. Just a few days earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had dismantled a group linked to the PMOI in the Sistan and Baluchestan province.
