Trump Accepts Invitation from North Korean Leader for Meeting

The National Security Advisor of South Korea announced that Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has invited Donald Trump, the President of the United States, for a meeting, and Mr. Trump has accepted this invitation. Chung Eui-yong, who led a delegation representing the South Korean government during a visit to the White House on Thursday, announced this news to reporters and added that Kim Jong Un promised to halt North Korea's nuclear and missile tests. He stated, "Kim Jong Un has expressed a desire to meet with President Trump as soon as possible. President Trump has also said he will meet with Kim Jong Un by May." On Thursday, after meeting with the South Korean delegation, Mr. Trump told reporters that South Korea would announce "big news" regarding North Korea later that day. Following this, news outlets, including CNN, reported that South Korean officials had delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to the President of the United States, inviting him for a meeting. These reports, citing a senior U.S. official, indicated that while North Korea has proposed to suspend its nuclear missile tests, the United States currently has no plans to suspend its joint military exercises with South Korea. CNN further reported that General H.R. McMaster, the U.S. National Security Advisor, is set to brief the United Nations Security Council on the situation in North Korea and discussions with the South Korean delegation. Trump had previously expressed his willingness to engage in talks with North Korea, but his administration stated that North Korea must first take serious steps towards denuclearization. A senior official in Donald Trump's administration told reporters on Tuesday, "All options are on the table, and our position regarding the North Korean regime will not change until we see serious actions towards denuclearization. What we are looking for are serious steps towards denuclearization." Relations between Washington and Pyongyang became highly tense last year due to North Korea's missile tests. In this context, Donald Trump has taken a dual approach in his rhetoric towards North Korea, threatening that Pyongyang should expect "fire and fury" from the U.S. while also expressing readiness for direct talks with the North Korean leader. Since taking office, Mr. Trump has imposed very severe sanctions on North Korea and has even succeeded in pressuring China to exert more pressure on North Korea.
