Trump Administration Claims Compliance with Iran Nuclear Deal

A federal judge in Chicago stated that the Donald Trump administration has indicated during a judicial inquiry that it complies with the nuclear agreement with Iran. According to the Associated Press, Judge Ruben Castillo's memo was published in official court documents on Thursday, March 1, and he ordered Boeing to provide details of its contract with Iran to the plaintiff's family. The federal judge reported that the Trump administration stated in a memo dated February 2 (one month ago) that it complies with the terms of the JCPOA but did not take a position on compelling Boeing to disclose the details of its contract with Iran. Previously, an American-Israeli family that was targeted by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad had requested that Boeing provide them with details of its contract with Iran. However, Boeing rejected this request, arguing that disclosing the details of its contract with Iran would not only harm the contract but also violate the terms of the nuclear agreement and U.S. foreign policy. The Libowitz family was attacked in 2003 on a highway in Israel by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad, resulting in the death of Naum, their seven-year-old child, and injuries to several other family members. The Islamic Jihad organization is listed as a 'terrorist group' by the U.S. State Department and is noted as 'financially supported by Iran.' The Libowitz family has requested $67 million in damages from Iran. Following the implementation of the JCPOA, Boeing signed a $16 billion deal to sell eighty aircraft to Iran Air. According to the Associated Press, a Boeing spokesperson declined to comment on the judge's order on Thursday. However, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives welcomed Judge Castillo's order. Peter Roskam reacted to the order on Thursday evening, stating that such an order 'highlights the risks of dealing with the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism.' Iran has consistently denied involvement in terrorist activities and, in turn, criticized U.S. actions in the region, accusing the Trump administration of non-compliance with the JCPOA.
