Trump and Moon Discuss North Korea's Recent Stance in Phone Call

On Sunday, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, spoke with Moon Jae-in, the President of South Korea, regarding North Korea's recent threats about the potential cancellation of the summit between the leaders of North Korea and the United States. According to the French news agency, the South Korean presidential office announced that Trump and Moon consulted over North Korea's recent positions and actions. After several weeks of warming relations between North and South Korea, which culminated in a meeting between the leaders at the border, Pyongyang has threatened that due to the U.S.'s 'unilateral' demands for denuclearization, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may not meet with Trump next month. North Korea also canceled a joint meeting with a high-level South Korean delegation at the last minute, citing the joint military exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea as the reason. In a statement from Moon Jae-in's office, it was mentioned that the leaders of the U.S. and South Korea agreed to maintain 'close cooperation' for the success of the summit between North Korea and the U.S., which is scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore. Moon Jae-in is set to meet Trump in Washington on Tuesday. A few weeks ago, the leaders of the two Koreas emphasized their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in the 'Panmunjom Declaration.' They also agreed to actively work towards declaring an end to the war and establishing a 'permanent and stable peace regime' through a trilateral meeting with the U.S. or a quadrilateral meeting including China and the U.S. this year, marking the 65th anniversary of the Korean Armistice. Just a few days prior to this meeting, the North Korean leader announced that his country would suspend missile and nuclear tests.
