Trump and North Korean Leader Meeting Scheduled for June 12

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Friday, June 1, that his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place on June 12 in Singapore. According to AFP, this decision was made by Donald Trump after a one-hour meeting in his office with Kim Yong Chol, a senior North Korean official. The U.S. President stated that interacting with South Korea will not be easy, but he believes that this process will ultimately be successful. Trump added that the senior North Korean official delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to him at the White House on Friday, describing it as 'very good and very interesting,' although he stated he had not opened the letter yet. General Kim Yong Chol, who personally delivered the letter from the North Korean leader to Donald Trump, is the Deputy Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and the former head of its intelligence agency. He is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the U.S. in 18 years and is said to have significant influence in Pyongyang's leadership, often referred to as the 'right-hand man' of the North Korean leader. Kim Yong Chol dined with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo the night before and their negotiations continued on Thursday. After Trump's meeting with the North Korean general on Friday, the U.S. President committed to not impose new sanctions on North Korea while talks between the two countries continue. Trump added that 'relationships are forming, and this is very positive.' In another statement that could raise concerns among America's regional allies, Trump mentioned that Kim Yong Chol discussed the number of U.S. military forces stationed on the Korean Peninsula during the meeting. According to the U.S. President, the dismantling of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula and North Korea's economic development were other topics discussed in the Friday meeting. Previously, Kim Jong Un had invited Donald Trump to negotiate, which Trump accepted, announcing he would meet Kim in Singapore on June 12. However, since then, some statements from senior U.S. officials have faced critical and somewhat harsh responses from North Korean officials. Pyongyang has protested the U.S. emphasis on pursuing the 'Libya option,' meaning first complete disarmament and then lifting sanctions. On May 24, the U.S. President abruptly canceled his scheduled meeting with Kim Jong Un. However, a day after canceling the meeting, the U.S. President stated that 'very constructive talks' had taken place with North Korea to arrange the meeting.
