Trump and Trudeau Agreement: Tariffs Suspended for 30 Days

On Monday, February 4, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated in a statement that "Canada has agreed to ensure our northern border is secure and to take action to end the deadly threat of drugs like fentanyl, which have entered our country and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, devastating families and communities across our nation." He mentioned that Canada will implement its "$1.3 billion border plan" and, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced, the country will "enhance border security using new helicopters, technology, and more personnel, increasing cooperation with American partners and providing more resources to stop the flow of fentanyl." In another part of his statement, Trump said that Canada and the U.S. will establish a joint task force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering. He mentioned that a new intelligence directive regarding organized crime and fentanyl has been issued and will be funded with $200 million. According to Trump, Canada will deploy nearly 10,000 personnel to protect the border. He emphasized that as President, his responsibility is to ensure the security of all Americans, stating, "I am doing exactly that." Trump expressed his satisfaction with Canada's decision on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the tariffs announced on Saturday will be suspended for a 30-day period to assess whether a final economic agreement can be reached with Canada. The U.S. President concluded that the agreement must be fair for all parties involved. Previously, he criticized the trade deficit with Canada and the prevention of certain American services and goods from entering Canada. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, also announced this agreement through a social media message. The Trump administration has accused Canada and Mexico of failing to take action against illegal immigration crossing into the U.S. Combating drug trafficking has been one of the main requests of the U.S. President. Earlier on Monday, Donald Trump also announced that the imposition of new tariffs on imported goods from Mexico would be suspended for a month following Mexico's agreement to deploy "immediately" 10,000 soldiers along the shared border. The U.S. President stated on Truth Social that he had a "very friendly" conversation with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, agreeing to the "immediate" deployment of these soldiers at the border. Trump remarked that the emerging trade war may be "painful," but it is worth the cost. The immediate result of Trump's tariffs was Mexico's agreement to deploy thousands of soldiers at the border. Trump stated, "As long as Canada and Mexico want to play games, we will continue to do so." Heavy tariffs on imported goods from China, Canada, and Mexico have been announced.
