Trump Announces Direct Negotiations Between the U.S. and North Korea

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Tuesday, April 17, that high-level negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea are taking place ahead of a summit between the two countries. Speaking at the start of his two-day talks with Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, in Florida, Trump stated: 'We have had direct negotiations with North Korea at very high levels. I really believe there is good will, and very good things are happening.' However, Trump emphasized that, as he always says, 'we will see what happens, because in the end, the result is what matters, not just having a meeting.' The U.S. President did not provide further details regarding the level of these negotiations or who is involved. Last month, Trump announced that he accepted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's proposal for direct talks. Nevertheless, on Tuesday, he mentioned that officials from both countries are negotiating five potential locations for his meeting with Kim Jong Un. In this context, U.S. officials told Reuters that Europe and Southeast Asia are among the proposed locations for this meeting. Reuters notes that Kim Jong Un rarely leaves North Korea, and speculations have arisen about locations such as Pyongyang, the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, Stockholm, Geneva, and Mongolia. Shinzo Abe also praised Trump's 'courage' for agreeing to meet with Kim Jong Un, stating: 'Regarding the North Korean issue, I would like to emphasize the importance of complete, verifiable, and irreversible disarmament, as well as the elimination of the missile program.' While Trump announced direct negotiations between North Korea and the U.S., reports of secret contacts between Washington and Pyongyang emerged last week. On April 7, U.S. officials told media outlets that 'U.S. State Department officials have communicated with Pyongyang through the North Korean delegation at the United Nations. Security officials have also had contacts through other means.' According to U.S. officials, Pyongyang is 'ready to negotiate on nuclear disarmament' in the Korean Peninsula. Relations between Washington and Pyongyang became extremely tense last year due to North Korea's missile tests. In response to these missile and nuclear tests, Trump threatened that Pyongyang should expect 'fire and fury' from the U.S. Since taking office, Trump has imposed very severe sanctions on North Korea and has even succeeded in pressuring China to exert more pressure on North Korea.
