Trump Arrives in Vietnam for Second Meeting with North Korean Leader

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, arrived at Hanoi International Airport, the capital of Vietnam, on Tuesday, March 7, for his second meeting with Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea. The goal of these negotiations is the denuclearization of Pyongyang in exchange for better relations with the U.S. and other countries, as well as the lifting of sanctions that have severely impacted North Korea's economy. Mr. Trump left Washington on Monday afternoon aboard Air Force One and arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday evening local time. Kim Jong-un, who traveled by his special armored train from Pyongyang, reached the Vietnam border on Tuesday morning and then traveled to Hanoi in an armored limousine. Trump and Kim will have dinner together privately on Wednesday evening to discuss their negotiation agenda for Thursday. Both parties hope to find a way to implement the agreements reached during their first meeting in the spring of this year, which took place in Singapore. On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also met with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Binh Minh. Mr. Pompeo referred to Vietnam as a 'partner and close friend of the United States' and stated that this friendship and partnership is strengthening. He also noted that Washington and Hanoi share 'common strategic interests' and are both seeking to promote peace, stability, and the establishment of a free Indo-Pacific region. Mike Pompeo arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday morning local time to prepare for Donald Trump's arrival in Vietnam. He described the U.S.-North Korea leaders' meeting as 'an important opportunity to advance the Singapore agreements aimed at reshaping the relationship between the two countries, establishing lasting peace, and complete denuclearization of North Korea.'
