Trump at Prayer Ceremony: America Stands with the People of Iran

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, said on Thursday at an annual prayer ceremony that America stands with the people suffering under oppressive and tyrannical regimes and all those who endure religious persecution and other forms of oppression. Mr. Trump stated, "We know that millions are suffering under the oppressive and tyrannical regimes in Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and other countries. America stands with you and all those who suffer from religious persecution and other oppressions." In Iran, protests were reported across the country in December of this year. During these protests in various cities, more than twenty people were killed, and according to a member of parliament, at least 3,700 were arrested. Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran, mentioned during the anniversary of the 1979 revolution that the reason for the fall of the monarchy in Iran was "not listening to the voices of the people's criticism" and stated that no one can prevent the people from expressing their opinions, criticisms, and even protests. Donald Trump had also openly supported the protesters during the protests in Iran, stating that the people of Iran would "see great support from America at the right time." Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States, also expressed support for the protesters in various statements, asserting that Mr. Trump would "not remain silent" regarding Iran. Iranian officials have blamed social media, foreign powers, and intelligence organizations for the protests in Iran. In this context, the Secretary of the Guardian Council expressed concern about what might happen next year. The annual report from the "Freedom House" regarding the state of freedom in Iran, and a survey by ISPA indicating that 75% of the surveyed population is dissatisfied with the current situation in the country, were also highlighted. Khamenei stated that fighting against oppression and corruption is very difficult. Reports of the ongoing crisis in Iran, the responsibility of the opposition, and the potential radicalization of Iranian society were also discussed.
