Trump Briefed on Alleged Iranian Plot to Assassinate Him

On Tuesday, September 25, U.S. intelligence officials briefed former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for the upcoming election, on the latest developments and information regarding the alleged Iranian efforts to assassinate him. According to Trump's campaign office, information about 'real and specific threats' from the Iranian government aimed at destabilizing and inciting chaos in the U.S. was provided to him by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. In a message posted on 'X' early Wednesday, September 26, Trump described this development as 'major threats from Iran against my life' and stated that the entire U.S. military is 'watchful and waiting.' He also warned that 'they will try again,' referring to previous 'unsuccessful' attempts by the Iranian regime. Trump expressed gratitude for the 'bipartisan' action of the U.S. Congress in approving additional funding for the Secret Service, emphasizing that he is heavily protected. He characterized an 'attack on a former president' as akin to a 'death wish for the attacker.' The Iranian government denies any involvement in U.S. affairs, despite the recent arrest of a Pakistani citizen accused of attempting to hire a 'hitman' on behalf of the Iranian government in the U.S. Asif Reza Merchant, 46, is accused of being connected to the Iranian regime in a plot to assassinate an American politician in retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani; however, the identity of his intended victim has not been disclosed to the media. Additionally, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley released FBI documents mid-September indicating that Tehran is pursuing the assassination of several prominent figures, including Donald Trump, President Joe Biden, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated they will avenge the blood of the former commander of the Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by the U.S. military near Baghdad airport on January 3, 2020, during Trump's presidency.
