Trump Calls for DOJ Investigation into FBI's Alleged Infiltration of His Campaign

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has stated that he is calling for a Department of Justice investigation into the possible "infiltration" by the FBI into his 2016 campaign. On May 30, Mr. Trump tweeted, "I will personally request the Department of Justice to investigate whether the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled my campaign for political purposes, and whether such requests came from individuals in the [Barack] Obama administration." Hours after this tweet, the Department of Justice asked its inspector general to expand the scope of its review of the National Security Agency's requests for surveillance. The aim of the inspections is to determine whether there were political motives during the FBI's investigation into "Russian interference" in the 2016 election. The NSA is part of the U.S. intelligence community and monitors satellite, telecommunications, and conversational activities. The DOJ's inspector general is currently reviewing complaints of "misconduct" by the FBI at the start of the investigations into "Russian interference" in the 2016 election. Mr. Trump has recently raised the possibility of FBI spying on his campaign during the early stages of the Russia investigations. Additionally, the U.S. President has made statements that seem aimed at linking the Russia investigations to the upcoming congressional elections to influence Republican votes. The U.S. intelligence community concluded at the end of its investigation in January 2017 that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, personally ordered actions to disrupt the U.S. elections, such as hacking the Democratic Party's internet system and releasing their emails, aimed at helping Donald Trump win and harming his opponent Hillary Clinton. Currently, Robert Mueller, the special counsel for the "Russian interference" case, is conducting investigations on this matter. Trump has denied any collusion or contact with Russia during the U.S. presidential election. Moscow has rejected the allegations of interference in the U.S. election process.
