Trump Calls for Ilhan Omar's Resignation from U.S. Congress

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on Tuesday, February 12, called for Ilhan Omar's resignation from the House of Representatives due to her claims regarding the financial allegiance of other members of Congress to Israel. Ilhan Omar, a Democratic representative from Minnesota, recently criticized the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), accusing it of using hundred-dollar bills to garner support from Congress members for Israel. This claim, however, sparked negative reactions from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S., who deemed it reminiscent of anti-Semitic remarks. One of the claims often used by anti-Jewish groups is that they buy off all politicians with money. Following these reactions, Ilhan Omar apologized, stating that 'anti-Semitism is real, and I am grateful to my Jewish friends and colleagues who have educated me about the painful history that anti-Semitism has wrought.' She then emphasized that she did not intend to offend American Jews or those who voted for her. However, Donald Trump deemed Ms. Omar's apology 'unacceptable' and stressed that 'anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress.' He then stated that this representative should resign from Congress or at least be removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee. Ilhan Omar, along with Rashida Tlaib, is considered one of the first Muslim women to have entered the U.S. Congress.
