Trump Calls for Investigation into Obama Administration's Financial License to Iran

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, accused the previous administration led by Barack Obama of allowing Iran access to the U.S. financial system through an "illegal" and secretive process. This accusation follows a report from a committee in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, which stated that the Obama administration issued a "secret license" for currency conversion to the Islamic Republic in 2016. The report indicated that the license was issued after the nuclear agreement with Iran, allowing Tehran to convert approximately six billion dollars of its funds held in a bank in Muscat, the capital of Oman, into U.S. dollars. In a tweet published on Thursday, June 7, Trump referred to this report, labeling Obama's actions as "completely illegal" and called for an investigation into the matter. However, the Associated Press reported that Trump mistakenly labeled this action as "illegal" since there was no prohibition against it. The issue is that the Obama administration had "repeatedly told Congress and the public that it had no intention of doing such a thing." The news agency added that Iran's plan ultimately did not come to fruition as two American banks were unwilling to participate, but the reality is that the U.S. Treasury Department did issue a license for the conversion of 5.7 billion dollars of Iran's foreign currency held in the Omani bank. The Associated Press further reported statements from former Obama administration officials who said that the decision to issue such a license was consistent with the spirit of the nuclear agreement, as it allowed Iran to regain access to its revenues abroad. Obama administration officials also expressed doubt about whether the issuance of such a license truly meant "access to the U.S. financial system." On the other hand, the revelation of this action by the Obama administration has met with negative reactions from Republican senators, who claim the previous administration deceived the American people. Trump, in his tweet, urged critical Democratic senators to focus their energy on investigating this issue. On May 8 of this year, the U.S. President withdrew Washington from the nuclear agreement with Iran known as the JCPOA, leading to the resumption of sanctions against Tehran, a decision that has so far faced opposition from the European Union.
