Trump: Democrats Seek Weakness and Inaction Against Iran

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, accused Democrats and their Senate leader of inaction and showing weakness against Iran, defending his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the nuclear agreement with Tehran. The nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran was made possible during Barack Obama's presidency, with negotiations led by his Secretary of State, John Kerry, a deal that Trump has opposed from the beginning, calling it 'the worst deal ever.' On Thursday, February 1, Trump tweeted: '[Chuck] Schumer and the Democrats are strongly advocating for a position of weakness and inaction against Iran. They have no idea what danger our country is facing.' A day before this tweet, Trump severely criticized U.S. intelligence agencies for their new report on Iran, labeling them as 'naive and foolish.' Sixteen U.S. intelligence agencies stated in a report to the Senate Intelligence Committee that despite the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, Iran has adhered to its commitments under it. The report indicates that Tehran currently has no significant activities related to nuclear weapons production, but its missile program remains a threat to the Middle East. Trump, who had previously warned about the nuclear threat from Iran, reacted to this report by suggesting that U.S. intelligence officials might need to go back to school. He stated: 'It seems that when it comes to the threat from Iran, the intelligence community is passive and naive. They are wrong.' These comments prompted a response from Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House, who accused Trump of ignoring the assessments and warnings from U.S. intelligence agencies. On Thursday, she praised the officials of these agencies, stating that their work in presenting 'the truth' to the Senate was a 'brave' act. She then remarked that it seems Trump 'lacks the necessary attention or interest in hearing what the intelligence agencies are telling him.' Nevertheless, in his tweet on Thursday, the U.S. President once again described his decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran as effective and 'good,' writing: 'Iran is now experiencing economic chaos due to sanctions and the end of the [nuclear] agreement.' He concluded by stating: 'The Democrats have put us in a bad position, but now our position is good.'
