Trump Expresses Doubt About Tillerson's Continued Role as U.S. Secretary of State

Donald Trump has stated that he is not sure if Rex Tillerson will remain as Secretary of State until the end of his presidency. Trump also expressed dissatisfaction that some officials at the State Department do not support his policies. According to Reuters, in an interview with Fox News aired late Thursday, November 2, Trump criticized the State Department under Tillerson's leadership, stating that he alone determines U.S. foreign policy. The President emphasized, "The one who matters is me, because when it comes time to make decisions about foreign policy, my decision is what counts." When asked by a Fox News reporter if Tillerson would remain in his position until the end of Trump's presidency, he replied, "We'll see what happens. I don't know." Trump is scheduled to travel to Asian countries on Friday. Reuters reports that Trump's recent comments about the Secretary of State have elicited reactions from congressional representatives. Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, responded to Trump's remarks by saying that since he is the only one who matters in determining foreign policy, it might be wise to consult with those who are more knowledgeable in this area. Trump has previously questioned Tillerson's decisions on sensitive U.S. foreign policy issues such as the North Korea crisis and relations with Iran. In response, Tillerson has complained about the White House's interference in his decision-making regarding important appointments. NBC News reported that Vice President Mike Pence had to persuade Tillerson not to resign over the summer, and during that meeting, Tillerson referred to Trump as "a moron." Tillerson reacted to the report by saying he never considered resigning but did not directly address the use of the "offensive" term. Later, his spokesperson stated that Tillerson never used such language. In another part of the interview, Trump stated, "I want to advance my vision; my vision belongs to me." He added, "Rex (Tillerson) is working hard at the State Department; he is doing his best." In this context, Tillerson stated last month, "I have never thought about resigning, and I am as loyal to Trump's policies today as I was when I accepted the position of Secretary of State." Tillerson, who is 64 years old, previously managed the large oil company ExxonMobil.
