Trump: I feel that Iranians will soon engage in dialogue with us

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated on Tuesday, August 1, that Iranian officials will likely enter negotiations with the U.S. government soon. Speaking at a rally in Tampa, Florida, Trump said, "My feeling is that they will soon engage in dialogue with us. They may not do this, and that's okay too." While the U.S. President mentioned the possibility of Iranian officials contacting him for negotiations, he also announced on Monday that he is ready to meet with Iranian officials and has "no preconditions" for this. Despite Trump's proposal to meet with Iranian leaders, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, and Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran, have yet to respond to this offer. The commander of the Revolutionary Guards sharply responded to Trump's proposal, stating that Donald Trump and future U.S. Presidents "will never see such a day" and that "the people of Iran will not allow a meeting with the Great Satan." In this context, the Iranian Foreign Minister reacted by saying that Washington should only blame itself for ending negotiations with Tehran after withdrawing from the nuclear agreement. Trump also criticized the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA during his speech, calling it a "horrific spectacle." However, he expressed hope that working with Iran would be fruitful and go well, noting that they are currently facing many problems. Previously, the head of the Iranian President's office stated that Trump had requested to negotiate with Rouhani eight times during Rouhani's last visit to the UN headquarters in New York, but these requests were not accepted. Following the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran in May of this year and the impending re-imposition of Washington's sanctions against Tehran, a new phase of verbal conflict between the two presidents has emerged in recent weeks. After Rouhani described war with Iran as the "mother of all wars" and peace with Iran as the "mother of all peace," Trump warned him not to "ever threaten America again." The U.S. seeks to renegotiate on Iran's nuclear and missile programs as well as its actions in the region. Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated yesterday that if the Iranians show a commitment to making fundamental changes in how they treat their people, reduce their destructive behavior in the region, and agree to enter into a deal that genuinely prevents the proliferation of nuclear weapons, then the President is ready to sit down and talk with them.
