Trump: I Hope Russia Takes the 'Right' Action Regarding Ukraine

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, expressed hope on Thursday, March 14, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, that Russia would take the 'right' action regarding Ukraine. Trump added that he hopes Russia will agree to a ceasefire. According to him, Vladimir Putin's statement is very encouraging but insufficient. The U.S. President, who has repeatedly called for an end to the bloodshed and the establishment of peace in Ukraine over the past months, stated that he is willing to talk to his Russian counterpart. Trump reminded that most members of NATO had previously not paid their designated share for NATO expenses, but as a result of his policies, they were forced to increase their defense spending and strengthen NATO. During this meeting, Mark Rutte criticized NATO's current policy regarding arms production by its members and their lagging behind China and Russia, calling for an increase in arms production. The meeting between Trump and Rutte at the White House coincided with Russian officials claiming that their forces had expelled Ukrainian military units from Soledar, the largest city in the Kursk border region, as a U.S. representative arrived in Moscow to negotiate a 30-day ceasefire plan for the war in Ukraine. According to the Associated Press, Ukrainian military units that had captured Soledar and parts of the Kursk border region during the summer have been under severe pressure from Russian forces for the past seven months. Russia's operations in the Kursk region have also received support from North Korean military units. The news agency noted that the capture of the Kursk region marks the first occupation of Russian territory by foreign forces since World War II. Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region on August 7 in a surprise attack. Ukraine carried out this attack to divert Russian forces from the war inside Ukraine and to have a bargaining chip in any peace negotiations with that country. However, the Associated Press states that this operation has not significantly changed the course of the war. In recent months, reports have emerged regarding the advance of Russian forces on Ukrainian territory. Russia claims: We have retaken the largest city of Kursk from Ukrainian forces.
