Trump Introduces His Candidates for Attorney General and CIA Director

U.S. power transition committee officials announced that Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, will appoint Jeff Sessions, the Senator from Alabama, and Republican Mike Pompeo to the key positions of Attorney General and CIA Director, respectively. Reuters reported on Friday, November 18, citing these officials without naming them, that both Mr. Sessions and Mr. Pompeo have accepted the President-elect's offer. The report states that Jeff Sessions and Mike Pompeo must now gain Senate approval to assume the roles of Attorney General and CIA Director. Reuters describes Mike Pompeo as a serious opponent of the nuclear deal with Iran, who just a day earlier expressed his eagerness to cancel it on Twitter, stating, 'I look forward to this disastrous deal with the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism being canceled.' Mike Pompeo, 52, has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas for three terms. Reuters also identifies Jeff Sessions as a close ally and loyal figure to Trump, whose views on immigration closely align with Trump's. Mr. Sessions, 69, who has previously served as the Attorney General of Alabama, opposes illegal immigrants obtaining U.S. citizenship in any way. He has also strongly supported Trump's promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Previously, Trump’s choice for National Security Advisor was announced to be Michael Flynn, the former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency. The Reuters report states that Mr. Flynn has also accepted the President-elect's offer, but he does not need Senate approval to hold this position. Meanwhile, CBS News reported on Trump's desire to have Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, in his cabinet and at the head of the State Department.
