Trump: Iran is not adhering to the spirit of the nuclear agreement

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has stated that Iran is not acting in accordance with the spirit of the 'nuclear agreement' with six world powers, and the U.S. government is closely examining this issue. According to U.S. media reports, Donald Trump made these remarks during a press conference with the Prime Minister of Italy, stating: 'They are causing tremendous damage to the signed agreement. This agreement was a very bad one that should not have been signed, and it should not have been negotiated in that way to reach this agreement.' The U.S. President emphasized: 'I can tell you that they (the Iranians) are not acting in accordance with the spirit of the agreement. We will examine it very carefully and will talk to you about it in the not-too-distant future.' He added: 'They must act according to the spirit of the nuclear agreement. We will see what happens.' While Donald Trump has spoken about Iran's approach to the nuclear agreement with the international community, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced yesterday that a comprehensive review of Washington's policies towards Iran is underway. Tillerson criticized the nuclear agreement with Iran, stating that the mistake made during the negotiation of the nuclear agreement was that all serious threats posed by Iran, aside from the nuclear threat, were ignored. The U.S. Secretary of State also stated that the nuclear agreement with Iran, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has 'failed' to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons because it has 'only' delayed Iran's access to nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's Foreign Minister, criticized these statements in a tweet, saying that 'the baseless accusations of the U.S. cannot cover up that country's acknowledgment of Iran's compliance with its JCPOA commitments.' Zarif referred to a letter from the U.S. Secretary of State to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in which it was stated that Iran has thus far adhered to the nuclear agreement. According to the JCPOA, which was agreed upon in July 2015 between Iran and six world powers, the U.S. State Department is required to report to Congress every 90 days on Iran's compliance with the JCPOA. Tillerson's letter is the first report from the U.S. government since Trump took office. Under the JCPOA, Iran suspended many of its nuclear activities, and international sanctions against it were suspended or lifted. In this context, the Iranian Foreign Minister stated: 'The U.S. must fulfill its commitments under the JCPOA.' Tillerson: 'The U.S. is reviewing its policies towards Iran.' Donald Trump is 'evaluating the benefits of the JCPOA for U.S. security.' The U.S. Treasury Secretary stated: 'Non-nuclear sanctions against Iran will increase.'
