Trump Nominates South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations

Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, announced that he will nominate Nikki Haley, the Governor of South Carolina, as the U.S. representative to the United Nations. Ms. Nikki Haley is a Republican of Indian descent who was a critic of Donald Trump during the election campaign. Thus, Nikki Haley becomes the first woman to hold a high office in Trump's administration and the second Asian American woman to serve as the U.S. representative to the United Nations. According to the Associated Press, Donald Trump stated in a press release on Wednesday, November 24, that 'Governor Haley has demonstrated in her record that she can bring people together regardless of their background and party affiliations to advance important policies for the betterment of her state and our country.' The elected President of the United States noted that the Governor of South Carolina is a good 'deal maker' and expressed the need for her skills on the global stage. Trump's transition team highlighted Haley's foreign trips for negotiations with international companies as one of her strengths. Nikki Haley also stated in a press release, 'The United States faces numerous challenges both domestically and on the international stage, and I am honored that the elected President has asked me to join his team.' Nikki Haley, 44, is the daughter of a Sikh Indian family and has been the Governor of South Carolina since 2011. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016. In response to Trump's attacks on Mexicans, Muslims, and his comments about women, she had said, 'Everything a governor does not want to see in a president is embodied in Donald Trump.' She had supported Senator Marco Rubio and then Ted Cruz. Ms. Haley had expressed her objections to the support of white supremacists for Trump and voiced her opposition to Trump's comments about Muslims.
