Trump: North Korea Ignored China's Request with New Ballistic Missile Test

On Saturday, North Korea tested a ballistic missile that was unsuccessful. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated that North Korea disregarded China's request with this action. The official South Korean news agency, Yonhap, reported early Saturday, citing military officials, that North Korea had tested a ballistic missile. American officials also confirmed in discussions with media that North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan. However, they clarified that this missile exploded over North Korean territory before reaching the sea, making it effectively a failed test. Donald Trump reacted to this missile test, stating that North Korea's recent missile test ignored China's request. Trump tweeted: "North Korea ignored the request of China and its respected President with today's unsuccessful missile test. Bad." A day earlier, the U.S. President had praised Chinese President Xi Jinping's efforts to resolve the North Korean crisis. Trump described North Korea as his biggest global challenge and indicated that there is a possibility of conflict with Pyongyang. CNN reported that this is the ninth missile test conducted by North Korea since Trump took office. Rex Tillerson, the U.S. Secretary of State, emphasized at the United Nations Security Council on Friday that the threat of attack from Pyongyang against Japan and South Korea is real, calling for Security Council action in this regard. The Secretary of State stated that the Security Council should act before North Korea attacks. China had previously warned about escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, stating that there is a risk that the situation could worsen significantly and even spiral out of control. Nonetheless, in an interview with Reuters, Donald Trump expressed his willingness to peacefully resolve the North Korean crisis, while also mentioning the possibility of a "big conflict" over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. Trump said on Thursday in an interview with Reuters that he intends to resolve this crisis peacefully, possibly through new economic sanctions, although military options would not be off the table. In part of this interview conducted in his office at the White House, he stated, "There is a possibility that we could enter a big, big conflict with North Korea. We really want to resolve issues diplomatically, but it is really difficult." In recent days, North Korea's military exercises and joint military maneuvers by Washington and Seoul have heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, while the United States has also deployed the THAAD missile system to South Korea to counter potential North Korean actions. Although the U.S. and South Korea emphasize that this system is used to counter North Korean threats, China is concerned that the powerful radars of the THAAD system could monitor areas within China and "disrupt the military balance in the region."
