Trump on Negotiations with North Korea: There is Still a Long Way to Go

The President of the United States says the outcome of negotiations regarding North Korea's nuclear disarmament is still uncertain. Trump's cautious remarks came after welcoming Pyongyang's decision to suspend its missile and nuclear tests. On April 21, Donald Trump stated: 'We still have a long way to go to conclude on North Korea; issues may be resolved, or they may not.' He added that only time will provide answers to these questions. Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, announced at the beginning of April that his country no longer needs to conduct nuclear and missile tests, has suspended them, and will also end operations at one of its most important nuclear testing facilities. This statement was welcomed by several countries close to Pyongyang as well as its critics. The U.S. President also tweeted: 'North Korea has agreed to suspend all its nuclear tests and close a large nuclear test site. This is very good news for North Korea and the world. Big progress! Looking forward to our joint meeting.' However, in recent days, media outlets have emphasized that Kim's statement does not imply agreement to eliminate its current nuclear arsenal and the missiles it has produced. Many analysts remain skeptical about the possibility that North Korea will destroy its existing weapons. Officials in the Trump administration have stressed that they do not intend to lift the severe sanctions imposed until Pyongyang takes substantial steps toward nuclear disarmament. Previously, Japanese media had also published similar reports, stating that Washington had informed Tokyo that it was seeking a timeline for nuclear disarmament, followed by the lifting of sanctions and pressures. North Korea has indicated through South Korean officials that it is willing to negotiate on nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula. In the coming days, the President of South Korea and the leader of North Korea will meet, which will be the third such meeting regarding inter-Korean issues. Trump and Kim Jong-un are also expected to meet soon, which, if it occurs, will be the first meeting of a sitting U.S. President with the North Korean leader.
