Trump Sanctions International Criminal Court; Netanyahu Expresses Gratitude

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, imposed economic and travel sanctions on individuals involved in the International Criminal Court's investigations against U.S. citizens or allies such as Israel. This action has elicited varied reactions. The International Criminal Court is a permanent court that can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression against the territories of member states or their nationals. Trump's action coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington. Netanyahu is under investigation by the ICC for the Gaza war. In response to the U.S. sanctions against the ICC, Netanyahu thanked the U.S. President for this 'bold action' on social media platform 'X', stating, 'This order will defend America and Israel against this corrupt anti-American and anti-Semitic court that has no jurisdiction to enforce the law against us.' On the other hand, Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, and other EU leaders consider Trump's sanctions against the ICC to be a mistake. Scholz stated, 'Sanctions endanger an institution responsible for ensuring that dictators cannot simply prosecute people or start wars, which is very important.' Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, wrote on social media 'Bluesky' that the ICC sanctions 'generally weaken the international criminal justice system.' The Netherlands, the host country of the court based in The Hague, also expressed regret over the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. The ICC condemned the U.S. sanctions against it, stating, 'We stand firmly with our personnel and will continue our commitment to bring justice and hope to millions of victims of crimes.' Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary and a staunch ally of Trump, said that the sanctions indicate it may be time for his country to withdraw from the ICC. He stated on 'X', 'It is time to see what we are doing in an international organization that is under U.S. sanctions. New winds are beginning to blow in international politics. Its name is the Trump tornado.' The sanctions include freezing the assets of designated individuals in the U.S. and banning them and their families from traveling to the United States. Some human rights activists believe these sanctions will have a detrimental impact and contradict U.S. interests in other war-torn regions that the ICC is investigating. The U.S., China, Russia, and Israel are not members of the ICC. The court has also taken measures to protect its staff against potential U.S. sanctions and has prepaid their salaries three months in advance. During Trump's first term in 2020, sanctions were also imposed against Fatou Bensouda, the ICC prosecutor, and one of her senior deputies due to their investigations into certain actions of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. The ICC, consisting of 125 members, can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression against the territory of any of its member states. In 2023, the ICC accused Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, of war crimes for the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine and issued a warrant for his arrest. In response, Russia banned the entry of Karim Khan, the ICC's chief prosecutor, and placed him and two judges of the court on a wanted list. Senator Jim Risch stated: 'We will not tolerate the corruption of the ICC.' Trump signs an executive order to sanction the ICC.
