Trump Says Musk Will Identify Billions in Resource Waste at the Pentagon

The President of the United States says he expects Elon Musk, head of the 'Government Efficiency Ministry', to identify billions of dollars in fraud and abuse at the Pentagon during his audit. Donald Trump stated on Sunday, February 10, in an interview aired by Fox News, regarding the Pentagon, the largest federal agency in the U.S.: 'We will find billions, hundreds of billions in fraud and abuse.' He further announced that 'very soon, perhaps within the next 24 hours,' he would tell Elon Musk to visit the Department of Education and then focus on the military. The Pentagon's budget is nearly one trillion dollars annually. Former President Joe Biden signed a bill last December allowing for $895 billion in defense spending for the current fiscal year, which ends on September 30. A federal judge blocked Musk's team's access to information from the U.S. Treasury Department. Elon Musk, who according to the White House is a special government employee, has been tasked by Trump with reducing the workforce in the federal government. As part of this initiative, Musk's aides are seeking access to confidential information in the computer systems of various government agencies. Critics argue that these efforts are illegal, pose a risk of disclosing classified information, and could effectively dismantle entire agencies without congressional approval. On February 9, a federal judge issued an order to halt the Government Efficiency Ministry team's access to sensitive materials from the U.S. Treasury Department and blocked their access to records containing sensitive personal information. Meanwhile, Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor, described the Pentagon as generally filled with unnecessary waste in a separate interview on Sunday, stating that shipbuilding processes at the Pentagon could be a specific area for the 'Government Efficiency Ministry.' Waltz, in an interview with NBC, said that everything there seems to be very expensive and time-consuming, with little of these resources reaching soldiers. He added that we really need experienced business managers to step in and 'completely reform the Pentagon's procurement process.' According to Reuters, leaders from across the political spectrum have long criticized waste and incompetence at the Pentagon. However, Democrats and civil service unions argue that the 'Government Efficiency Ministry' under Elon Musk lacks the necessary expertise to reform the Pentagon and that its efforts pose a risk of exposing classified programs. Musk's companies also have major contracts with the Pentagon, raising serious concerns about conflicts of interest.
