Trump: The criminal regime of Iran should not be allowed to continue its destabilizing actions

On Tuesday, September 19, U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first speech at the United Nations, referred to the Iranian government as a "rogue" state that, according to him, spends the country's resources on "violence" in the region. Trump also called on the international community to confront what he described as the "destabilizing actions of the criminal regime" of Iran. He stated: "We cannot allow the criminal regime of Iran to continue its destabilizing actions while pursuing its dangerous missile program. We cannot adhere to an agreement if it serves as a cover for a final nuclear weapons program." Trump emphasized that the Iranian government hides a corrupt dictatorship behind a facade of false democracy. He noted that the Iranian government has turned a historically rich and wealthy country into a rogue state with a hollow economy, whose main exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos. The people of Iran have long been the primary victims of the leaders of this country. The U.S. President added: "Instead of using the country's resources to improve the lives of the Iranian people, the country's oil revenues are spent on Hezbollah and other terrorist groups that kill innocent Muslims and attack peaceful Arab and Israeli neighbors. This wealth, which belongs to the Iranian people, is used to support the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, to fund the civil war in Yemen, and to undermine peace throughout the Middle East." Trump referred to the Iran nuclear deal with six world powers as a "bad deal" and emphasized that the U.S. would never remain in a one-sided agreement that brings no benefit to the country. He further stated that this agreement is the "worst one-sided deal" the U.S. has ever signed and called it "a disgrace for America." He made it clear, "This agreement is a disgrace for the United States, and I don't think you know the end of it." According to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in July 2015 between Iran and six world powers, Iran halted parts of its nuclear program in exchange for the suspension of nuclear sanctions against it. While Trump warned about U.S. adherence to the JCPOA, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated the day before that the JCPOA is a multilateral international commitment recognized by the UN Security Council and said, "Exiting this commitment will have a very heavy cost for the U.S." Trump continued his speech by emphasizing: "Believe me, this is an opportunity for the whole world to join us in asking the Iranian government to end death and destruction." He stated that everyone knows the Iranian people want change, and the leaders of Iran fear their people more than anyone else. He added: "That is why the government restricts access to the internet, collects people's satellites, shoots at peaceful student protests, and imprisons those who seek reform. However, the U.S. President said: "Repressive regimes do not last forever, and the day will come when the people can choose."
